Sassy Sundress

To contact us Click HERE
This charming little sundress is made using the pattern "I am Sassy Sundress" from the book "I am Cute Dresses" by Sato Watanabe. See my book review here. This dress was fairly easy to make (about an intermediate level).

The fabric is a lightweight cotton in dark gray with a diagonal stripe. On one side of the fabric the diagonal is dark and the other side it's white. I decided that the darker stripe side would be the "right side".

If you are going to make this dress and you have a bust larger than 36 inches, you should carefully check the measurements and adjust as needed. I added width to the bodice but did not add any to the neck binding and the dress is too tight across the upper bust. Adding length to the straps did not help and I still need to make an alteration to the dress before I will be really comfortable while wearing it.

The neck binding seems to be placed right but I think the problem is that the arm hole is very shallow. A deeper angle at the armpit would probably make it more comfortable.

Don't forget, if you make the bodice bigger, you'll also need to make the waist casing bigger. I also made a pretty long waist tie.

The skirt is just a big rectangle with the bodice inserted in the middle. I love the way it hangs in a handkerchief hem style.

Overall, it's a really cool dress and I could see making it again once I get the sizing figured out. It's a great dress for summer weather, nice and breezy.

After a recent check-up at the doctor's office we decided we needed a way to make sure Big Sister is getting enough fluids.  She drinks milk in/with breakfast, but drinks water the rest of the day.   I've never figured out a way to get her to drink more milk until I had the doctor tell her she needs to be drinking 3 glasses a day.  We worked out a chart to be sure she's getting enough of all the right fluids- 3 glasses of milk, 2 glasses of water, and one glass of juice.

Here's what we do:
Milk- one in/with breakfast, one with her afternoon snack, and one with dinner.
Water- at school- she takes a small bottle with her to school and refills it once she has finished it.
Juice- I make her popsicles from juice using the Tupperware popsicle mold.  Now, I know this is only 2 oz, but she usually gets a little juice at some point in her day, so I am not so worried about it.  She enjoys the popsicle treat, and I am happy it's not completely loaded with sugar.

Here's a chart I made to help Big Sister remember what she has had already.  I gave her an off on Sunday since we are usually pretty busy that day.

A 3-Year Folding Calendar Template for 2011, 2012 and 2013

To contact us Click HERE
Here's a new calendar template for photoshop (in psd format) that I've been working on. A little late, I know, but this calendar contains three years from 2011 right through to the end of 2013. Each part of the calendar can be edited in photoshop as everything on the template is still in it's text format - that means you can change the text styles and colours, and you can move things around a little (like changing the spacing for instance). This calendar template is designed to print on an 8.5" X 11" cardstock or heavy photo paper, and then gets folded into a triangular, three dimensional stand-up calendar.

(NOTE: the instruction images can be viewed larger size by clicking the image)

If you download the psd file to use in photoshop you'll find that all the separate layers have been grouped into folders in the layers palette. When you open the file you'll see a folder for 2011, 2012 and 2013, with a white background layer with fold lines, and a transparent layer. You can choose whether or not you want to print out the fold lines on your completed calendar or whether you just want a plain background.

If you open the 2011 folder you'll see a text layer for the date of the year (2011), and twelve folders (one for each month), with a thirteenth folder for the day headings (M, T, W, T, F, S). When you open one of the month folders you'll see layers for the name of the month (text layer) and then layers for each week (text layers) with the dates on them.

This organizing of folders within folders means you open only the sections you need open to work on, keeping the confusion to a minimum. This calendar template has so many layers having them all open at one time would make editing very confusing for most folks. As well, you can move an entire year from one part of the calendar to another simply by dragging the entire thing. Cick on the folder for 2011 - then click on the visible text on the image area, and drag it - you'll see that it moves everything together as a single image (even though it's text). That means if you want to put 2011 in the middle slot with the other two years on the outer sections you can do that very quickly. You can also delete a section if you want, and just put your own image in it.

The calendar has space at the bottom for your business or any other text you wish to include in your calendar. Because the layers are transparent, you can put images on your calendar - one large image that stretches across all three years, or three individual images (one for each year) under the text.  However you want to set it up.

Once it's completed, you'll use a ruler and scribe along the fold lines to make the folding easier and the actual edges neater. It doesn't have to be a "scribe" - use anything that's got a sharp point like one side of a pair of scissors, or an ice-pick or an awl and run it along the fold line. Don't put too much pressure on it; you don't want to cut right through it, you just want to inscribe it a little.

Use double-sided tape along the larger folding edge (the wider gray area). Fold the calendar so the images and text are facing outwards. Pull the facing off the two sided tape, fold under the small gray edge and stick it to the tape on the wider edge. The result is a triangular stand-up calendar. I designed this to fit ordinary card stock or photo paper (8.5 X 11), but if you have access to larger pager (8.5 X 14) you can increase the width of the template in photoshop, giving you a wider text area for each year.

I also have this calendar in png format with a transparent background - this does not contain the fold lines, but because it is transparent you can place your own backgrounds on this. This was mostly created for those who don't use photoshop but who do have editing programs that support layers. As well, for those who don't have programs that support layers or transparency, there is a calendar template in .jpg format with the white background and fold lines. Make sure you download the right version for your program.

Patriotic Pinwheels :: Cupcake Monday

To contact us Click HERE

Hi, it’s Carrie Sellman from Half Baked – The Cake Blog.  I’m excited to be back today, sharing a new cupcake tutorial just in time for the 4th of July holiday.  I’m putting a fun spin on the traditional stars and stripes of the American flag.  Patriotic Pinwheel Cupcakes!  With bold stripes and playful dots, these fondant toppers are a festive addition to your Independence Day cupcakes!  And I’m going to show you how to make them!

If you’ve never worked with fondant before, this is a great place to start!  To simplify this tutorial, I’m using pre-colored, store-bought fondant, available at most craft stores.  A small multi-color pack, like this one, contains both the red and the blue we’ll need.  (Plus some yellow and green you can save for a later project.)  If you’ve ever played with playdough,  you can make a fondant pinwheel!

PATRIOTIC PINWHEEL CUPCAKES
a DIY by Carrie Sellman

Supplies:

  • Your Favorite Cupcakes
  • Fondant in red, white and blue (about 4 oz  of each)
  • Rolling pin
  • Parchment paper
  • Square cookie cutter or ruler
  • Sharp knife

Step by Step Instructions

STEP 1:  Kneed fondant in hands until soft and smooth like playdough.

STEP 2:  Take a small amount of red and roll it out onto parchment paper using a rolling pin.  Roll just as you would pie crust but we want this thinner.  About 1/4 of an inch or thinner.  Cut a square using a square cookie cutter or a ruler and sharp knife.  Roll out and cut a blue square, just as you did for the red.  You now have two squares.

STEP 3:   Lightly brush a few drops of water onto the red square.  (Go easy with the water, you only need to lightly dampen the fondant.)  Place blue square on top of red square.  Gently roll again with your rolling pin to seal these two layers.  Don’t worry that it is no longer a perfect square.

STEP 4:  Use your cookie cutter again to trim the excess edges, leaving behind a straight square.  (Discard your trimmings or save for a purple project later).  You now have one square that is red on bottom, blue on top.

STEP 5:  Using your knife, make diagonal slits cutting from each corner towards the center.  Lightly moisten the very center with a dab of water.

STEP 6:  Gently pick up one corner and bend it in so that the point reaches the center.  Press down gently so the point sticks to the center.

STEP 7:  Repeat Step 6, folding in every other corner until you have a pinwheel shape.

STEP 8:  Roll or cut a tiny ball of white fondant for the center.  Attach to center with a light drop of water, if needed.  Push down gently to seal.

STEP 9:  Let pinwheels dry on parchment paper overnight or until completely dry and firm.  Place on top of cupcakes when ready to serve.

If you want to simplify this even more, make your pinwheels a single solid color (skipping steps 3 and 4).  If you’re up for some additional fun, add dots or stripes to your pinwheels!

I hope my Patriotic Pinwheel Cupcakes are a fun addition to your Independence Day!  For more 4th of July baking inspiration, please come join me at Half Baked – The Cake Blog.  This week we’re showcasing fabulous new cakes inspired by the American flag.  Enjoy!  ~ Carrie

Preppy Pool Party :: Celebrating Tommy’s 7th Birthday

To contact us Click HERE

As you may know, we recently celebrated our sweet boy, Tommy’s 7th birthday party! It has become tradition for us to throw a big pool party each year for his birthday since we live in Arizona and it’s usually over 100 degrees by mid June. We were excited that our pool and backyard were finished just in the nick of time! The party colors and style were inspired by the fabulous navy and green cabana stripe pillows and umbrellas that I recently ordered from Pottery Barn to add some color to the backyard decor. Vicki from Vicki Lynn Photography captured all of the details of the party!

Our paper lanterns in dark blue and kelly green were a must for this outdoor party. I used them both inside the house and in the backyard!

My fabulous friends at Pottery Barn Kids sent these perfect green/navy striped turtle towels and camping lanterns in navy and green. They perfectly matched the party decor!

The day before the party, I spotted the navy/white striped cabana on a postcard from our local pool supply store! Though it ended up being quite hot in there, the kids loved it.

Our green polka dot umbrellas from Tommy’s party last year were perfect to use this year, along with a family sized towel and navy adironack chairs from Pottery Barn Kids.

I created a simple dessert table in our dining room which leads right out to the patio.  Giant, round balloons were a perfect and easy backdrop!

What’s a party without cupcakes? I baked chocolate cupcakes (Tommy’s fave) in our green and blue striped baking cups and topped our new Printable Pool Party Designs! I ordered decorated sugar cookies from Mandy of Sugar on Top and she did an incredible job. Everyone was so impressed with the designs! I have no idea how she can recreate the exact font from the invitation in frosting. So amazing.

Stripes, beach balls and monogram cookies….perfection!

My mom made chocolate cake pops in green and white and we filled the white vessels with our blue gumballs. My BFF, Kristi always makes fruit pizza and when I spotted this beach ball idea on Pinterest, I asked her to make it in blue and green (blueberries and kiwi). Didn’t it turn out fabulous?

I bought large cookies and placed them in our new green rugby striped favor bags lined with glassine bag liners (to prevent grease), and topped with twine and custom printable tags.

We just got fabulous blue and white striped popcorn boxes in stock (coming soon to the shop!) and I designed green monogrammed party circles to add to the boxes.

Our navy and green plates, cups, napkins and straws were perfect for the theme! Gumball tubes are festive favors for the guests to take home and the kids love them!

Tommy requested an ice cream cake (yum!) so I ordered a simple one from Baskin Robbins and topped with printable flag bunting and one of the amazing cookies! I ordered custom rugby striped wooden forks to serve with the cake and they were adorable! (coming soon to the shop!)

Our sweet boy….and yummy cake! Don’t you love the “fudge crunch” in between the layers of ice cream cake?

Fun with friends….

Happy 7th Birthday to our amazing boy, Tommy!
